I read that as referring to the small proportion of religious people who are totally nuts, not all religious people, but I might be wrong.
Lucky that Cecchin works for Rugby League.
Article from 2008.
Former state premier Jeff Kennett has provoked a gay rights storm by backing a football club that sacked a trainer for being gay.
The Hawthorn president and potential Melbourne lord mayor sparked calls for his sacking after saying Bonnie Doon Football Club was within its rights to sack veteran trainer Ken Campagnolo after it found out he was gay.
"The club felt that once this had been pointed out and you had this gentleman there who was obviously close to young men - massaging young men - it ran an unnecessary risk and that's why it decided it was best that he not perform those duties again. So the club was trying to do the right thing," Mr Kennett said.

Because when someone with any kind of public profile says that they're gay, a kid somewhere thinks "oh wow, I actually can live my life honestly, without ridicule, and still have whatever kind of career I want".
It shouldn't be a big deal and, hopefully, one day it won't be. But it IS important right now because there is still a ****load of homophobia in the world.
I don't understand why everyone is praising him. So he came out and said he was gay. Did we really need to know that? Should he also tell us which foot he puts his socks on first? Clear attention seeking.

Particularly so in the sporting world. Aside from Ian Roberts, Martina Navratalova, Ian Thorpe* and Matthew Mitchum, I can't really think of any outed athletes.
With Matthew Mitcham being openly gay, after winning the Gold Medal he never got the endorsements others received.
IMO: It was because he is gay, the endorsements never came his way.
All the other Gold Medal winners were swamped with endorsements.
The most homophobic people I know are Aussie bogans, not religious at all. They're also racist & inbred.
Anyway, I think it's brave of Cecchin to come out. Especially as a Ref, who get more abuse than the PM. And if it wasn't still scary to come out there'd be more players out of the closet! (cooper cronk I'm looking at u, lol)
Remember aker's comments?
Attention seeking?? Why would a homosexual REFEREE want to draw MORE attention to himself?
That is simply the dumbest response I have ever seen on BHQ. Congratulations, you've made history.
or even worse, a referee!
