POST GAME Round 22 - Dragons vs Broncos

A win is a win and we desperately needed to win so we've gotta take it. It was always going to be a grinding tough contest and that's exactly what it turned out to be. I didn't think it was a terrible game at all considering the conditions as both teams threw the ball around and tried to attack but of course the weather was always going to be a factor. Loved Sam Thiaday's performance 20 carries for 190 meters, a try, 4 tackle busts and 28 tackles awesome stuff. Both he and Gillett brought some attitude and effort to the team that was missing last week which was great. Far better effort from the guys for a desperately needed win.

To quote Sammy "It was like losing your virginity it wasn't very nice but we got it done"

I'm just gonna go ahead and say it, our halves need to spend the next few weeks practicing nothing but their short kicking game placement and timing, I'm getting quite annoyed watching them both kick the ball into the opponents legs 4-5 times a game.

Might just be the tight fitting jerseys ,but am II starting to see a few extra kgs on a few other guys besides Sammy and Milford? Corey Parker mainly.

Josh McGuire looked like a skinny midget last night for some reason. Just doesn't strike me as a starting prop.

Any news on Gillet.? He looked like he was having real problems with that left shoulder for a few sets. I was surprised he didn't come off earlier actually. If I it is shoulder.......gulp!

A niggly injury according to Hunt.

We'll find out soon enough if he is playing next week.

I know it's a lot to ask a 5/8 not to throw passes nearly 3 metres forward and for 27 year old halfbacks to be able to put a kick through the line, rather than repeatedly into opposition players legs and for wingers to catch a ball occasionally, but I'm going to anyway.

The Dragons incompetence gave us that win. Very little of what we did tonight would have been enough against almost any other team. We put 30 on the Rabbits a few weeks back remember?

How did our 'form' improve after that?

You want to be a smart arse, that's fine, but expect your loyalty to be questioned.

I agree that the two things you pointed out are frustrating and need to be fixed, but if you want to focus solely on that and not mention the many improvements the team made, or the improvements individuals like hunt and Thaiday made - then you are rightfully going to be seen as someone just poking for bites.

They knocked on and were awarded no try as a consequence. That decision goes against us and we'd have lost the game. That ruling saved the game for us, so if you are happy with that, well I guess it doesn't take much to keep people happy...

That's completely speculative. That happened with something like 20 minutes to go. I'm not happy that we put the cue in the rack but if we were down on the scoreboard they would have kept playing.

Whether or not the team can glean some confidence or momentum from this waits to be seen but tonight's win is nothing to crow about. Anyone trying to talk of improvement is really grasping at straws, for neutrals this game would have been horrible to watch for the sheer lack of polish & professional NRL play on display.

No one was expecting polish and professional NRL tonight. This was about grinding out a win and trying to crawl out of this slump. There were many improvements made and that's all I wanted.

Anyone that was realistic would of been happy with this win, if you set yourself up to expect a polished thrashing then that's your fault.

I don't give a **** about what a neutral would think.

Does the correct Slavic pronunciation have his name ending with 'check' or 'chitch'?

Opa-check or Opa-chitch?

No, no, no - it's spelt Opa-check, but it's pronounced 'Throatwobbler Mangrove'.

It was all stacked against us from the beginning.
1. Thursday night
2. Appalling un Brisbane conditions.
3. Playing against a crippled team.
4. Ben Cummins swayed by a crowd of 17.
5. Most importantly . Weird jersey.

a win under these circumstances is actually quite impressive.

Once again, prepare yourselves, this is not a negative post, I will leave that to the others who have posted earlier.

With the way we have been playing, and the conditions, I don't think anyone could have expected anymore than what we got last night. Anyone who cannot see the marked improvements last night is being overly critical in my view, and a little unrealistic. The form slump we have been in, we were never going to snap out of it like that *snaps fingers* and start playing like the start of the season.

The positives as I saw them are:-

1. We had a win. We had a win against a team playing for their season, on a ground that we traditionally do not play well at, and a ground where the opposition had been defeated this year.

2. We had a win playing in horrendous conditions.

3. Attitude - it was like night and day between last night and the previous weeks. From the start the entire team was switched on last night, their body language was good and Hunt in particular looked a lot better in this area.

4. They took the first steps back towards getting their defensive attitude and application right, and even better, it was clear that they were playing for each other last night in defence (which they have not been doing).

5. The return of the old Sammie Thaiday. He had a sensational game in my view and I fervently hope that was not a one off cameo but a taste of what he is going to deliver every week from here on.

6. The return of Gillett. What a difference he made to the defensive structure and defensive effort. Hopefully we are not going to lose him to injury.

7. The return of Maguire - made good metres, he also made a difference to the defensive structure and efffort.

8. Blair - is really getting back to doing the 1%ers and he is really making an effort to putting pressure on the kickers. Hopefully common sense reigns and he does not get cited for what was in reality an accident with the major cause being the player slipping into the tackle.

9. Generally a better kicking game from the halves, but still a lot more improvement that can be made there. In particular for Hunt kicking in theattacking 20 to get restarts, he must ensure that the ball gets through the line and into the in goal. Too often he finds the legs of a defender.

10. Much improved attacking structure coming from the halves. Both Hunt and Milford are showing signs of wanting to run the ball more, more of that please boys.

11. Improved game management from the halves, but still a lot of work to be done there.

12. Opacic - is looking solid and appears to be a good prospect.

13. Maranta - he gets a lot of criticism on here (including from me just lately), but too be fair, that was not too bad a game from him last night. In comparison to Eden it was a superb game. If we need to keep picking him, if he can at least play to that standard and try and improve 5% each game from where he was last night, he becomes a really viable back up option for us.

14. We still have Kahu and KNik to come back into the team.

15. We had a win.

The challenge for them now is to build on that next week, and have incremental imrpovements each week to try and play themselves into some form prior to the finals commencing.

Give Maranta a break he only found out mid game his grandfather had died- so did his grandfather too.

Great work Voss.

Did Voss not think that if the co-founder of the club died the club wouldn't be doing something?

Jesus Christ I had no idea. That's awful.

Yep, great research there, he is an the early favourite for the Carige award for commentators.
