If he remains injury free and gets some mobility and confidence back, I can see him starting again. The other areas of his game definitely seemed to improve a bit (such as reliability under the high ball and defence), he just lacked the athleticism, possibly due to all the injuries he kept...
37% to potentially swing the momentum is worth it to me. I don't think starting your defensive set on your 10 metre vs your 30 metre line 2 out of every 3 times is that big a deal compared to the benefits of getting the ball back.
It's not a "win big or lose big" play. The grand final mistake was an anomaly, the most a team usually loses is about 20 metres/2 tackles. Which also means the defensive line doesn't have to run an extra 50 metres (30metres forward from the goal line and 20 metres back after the first 2 tackles...
I'm a big fan and Broncos have generally been very successful with it in 2023. I dunno what happened in the Grand Final, but if someone was ready for the bat back (as they should have been), we would have called it a massive play and the Broncs probably would got a lot of confidence out of it.
He reffed it like an Origin game, it should have suited the Broncos....and if they don't make 7 or 8 errors or whatever it was in the first 20 minutes I really think it could have benefited them.
Its easy to hate Cleary because of how good he is, but he's really just a stand out example of what an NRL star should be like. Doesn't get into any trouble, doesn't buy into his own hype, isnt an arrogant prick...he just keeps delivering and leading his side. No issues with him and Carrogan...
The question marks over the squad are:
1. Can Mam and Walsh make another big jump with another year of experience?
2. Will Reynolds start to decline at 34?
These 2 are the biggest questions.
3. Can Cobbo and Staggs go up level and make up for what the team loses with Farnworth? Can they...
We enjoyed it, it brought the forum together, its just the ending that was a disappointment. Definitely at least an 8 out of 10, we'll look back on some of the games fondly, especially the last Storm one.
If the Broncos go one better next year upgrade it to a 9/10.
I'm gonna disagree. Broncos success rate from them has generally been really good, so much so that I think it's worth making a first tackle in your 10 rather than your 30 if it doesn't work.
It just....really went wrong today, but it went wrong for a long distance one too. Reynolds wad just off.
We won't know how this affects the team until next year, but unless Mam and Walsh suddenly have a huge decline in their running games like Milford had midway through 2016, I think they'll manage it better. Reynolds won't be affected as much as Hunt was. The spine will be the key and hopefully...
Haas and Flegler were consistently the ones who got the Broncos into decent field position to get a kick away with massive efforts when the sets started off poorly. They did their jobs and then some.
Losing Herbie and Flegler really does look like it's going to be huge. They were probably in the top 6 players tonight. They need instant quality replacing ASAP before Reynolds retires.
