A member of the Broncos recruitment and retention committee, Lockyer backed Hunt and Anthony Milford, both off contract for 2018, to lead his old club to a premiership. But he said the halves needed to improve their game management to guide Brisbane to their premiership since 2006, Lockyer said. “Darius (Boyd) has put his hand up with leadership credentials and probably was our best player in the second half of the year,’’ Lockyer said. “(But) it’s probably a good opportunity to start developing younger players in leadership roles, like Ben Hunt and Andrew McCullough. Ben Hunt should be considered for the Broncos captaincy, says Darren Lockyer.“Darius, Ben, Andrew and Sam (Thaiday) would be in the mix. “They all have different qualities ... (and) whether it’s Hunt or McCullough, the extra responsibility would be good for their evolvement as leaders.’’ Coach Wayne Bennett must find a new leader after the retirement of stalwart Corey Parker. Lockyer said Johnathan Thurston’s greater experience had helped thwart Brisbane in both the 2015 grand final and Friday’s semi-final loss. “I read a stat last week that in their previous three games against the Cowboys, the Broncos kickers had forced no line dropouts and the Cowboys had eight. “In Friday’s game, the Cowboys forced the only two line dropouts of the game,’’ he said. “It’s that mentality of building pressure. Our young halves are a work in progress, but need to be better. “Milford is only in his second year at No.6. “Hunt has been there a little longer (three seasons as starting halfback). They will get better at closing games out. Andrew McCullough should be considered as a replacement for Corey Parker as captain.“They came up against a guy who is not only brilliant but has experience on his side. “I think Hunt and Milford were better at managing games this year than they were last year. “Another couple of years, they become among the most experienced halves. “What JT (did, setting up the winning try in extra time) was the clutch play from the best in the game.’’ The Broncos will do well to hold both halves, given that 12 other first graders come off contract along with Hunt and Milford at the end of 2017. Milford made a slashing line break in the 77th minute of Friday night when Brisbane led by two points, but the play broke down. Hunt also made a surging run when the Cowboys led 26-20 with three minutes left of extra time, but turned the ball over. Milford’s total of 18 handling errors this year is second only to Tiger Mitchell Moses (20) among NRL players, but he is widely regarded as the game’s next $1 million a season player.
