BRISBANE BRONCOS 26 (H. Farnworth (2) 13', 54', J. Fauid 34', K. Staggs 58', B. Russell 65' tries; K. Staggs 3/6 goals) def. NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS 24 (J. Clifford 4', M. Dunn 9', E. Pere 23', M. Carroll 50' tries; J. Clifford 4/5 goals) Halftime: North Queensland 18-8 Errors: North Queensland 10-7 Penalties: Brisbane 10-7 Sin Bin: Nil Sent Off: Nil Referee: Liam Kennedy & Belinda Sleeman Touch Judges: Wyatt Raymond & Jack Ebert Completion Rates: North Queensland 27/36 (75%); Brisbane 33/38 (87%) A gutsy win to round out a strong finish to the season. Brisbane managed to win 8 of their final 10 games, an impressive feat when you consider 5 of their final 6 games were all against Top 4 teams. They had to do it the hard way against the North Queensland Cowboys. The Broncos lost Gerome Burns early in the contest and found themselves down 18-4. Things didn't get much better with 30 minutes to go with the scores at 22-8 and David Fauid left the field through injury. With their season on the line, the Broncos forward pack rallied, powering over the advantage line and scoring three quick tries to give the Broncos an unlikely lead. In a tense finish, the Broncos were able to draw a penalty and back-up kicker Kotoni Staggs nailed the match winner cementing the Broncos place in the 2017 Holden Cup Finals series, the sixth in club history. Star Performers Patrick Carrigan - 80 Minutes, 20 Runs (198m), 35 Tackles (1 Missed), 1 Offload, 1 Try Assist Jai Whitbread - 62 Minutes, 18 Runs (157m), 25 Tackles (3 Missed), 3 Tackle-Breaks, 1 Try Assist Kotoni Staggs - 80 Minutes, 1 Try, 3 Goals, 13 Runs (142m), 34 Tackles (1 Missed), 2 Line-Breaks, 3 Tackle-Breaks Sam Elliott - 39 Minutes, 12 Runs (154m), 19 Tackles (2 Missed), 1 Line-Break, 4 Tackle-Breaks Brandon Russell - 80 Minutes, 1 Try, 12 Runs (133m), 1 Line-Break, 16 Tackles (3 Missed), 5 Tackle-Breaks But really there were a lot of strong performers. Farnworth scored 2 tries, Allan set 2 up, Tyson Smoothy made 38 Tackles and broke 7 tackles, (but made 3 errors and gave away 3 penalties...), O'Hara made 103m from only 7 hit-ups and J. Fauid contributed with a try, a try assist and a solid defensive outing (25 tackles only 1 missed). Brisbane can finish this week as high as 6th provided the 2nd placed Panthers beat the 7th placed Sea Eagles. If that doesn't happen, then both teams will swap over. As soon as details are released, I'll be sure to update all the match information and what time you catch the team on FoxLeague.
