[QUOTE="BroncsFan, post: 3685559, member: 9052"] It all seemed to kick off from the Toyota Cup... young guys would've been known in the club circles and diehard footy fans, but the average joe didn't know them until they appeared on the footy field. Toyota Cup gave the young guys sudden exposure and then NRL became big money with billion dollar TV deals, so suddenly the media need to fill a 24hr news cycle because the public keep wanting more. That's given the media power... they're basically driving all the narratives around league at the moment. Player managers, players and clubs are all just lobbyists trying to get their slice of the news cycle at whatever price is required... and the public just keep eating it up, so the media just keep pushing more and more garbage out. And a part of that garbage is hyping up whichever player the player manager tells them too... There's probably some Ponga effect in there... young guys were getting paid big before Ponga, but knights were on the back of 3 wooden spoons in a row... recruiting established stars wasn't happening so they threw cash at Ponga, got him and now they have a million dollar player and the money that got him there is chump change now. There's also the FOMO that broncos are guilty of... they see a young guy coming through and they end up throwing cash at them to not lose them. Broncos issue is that they probably go after every star junior coming through and then have trouble keeping them, because every club knows about them anyway, but they also seem to have trouble picking the right ones to keep. Either way young guys aren't having to bide their time in reserve grade... if they're down there too long they'll kick stones and force a move... and their manager will be more than accommodating because they get a new commission out of it.
