That's where I am critical of Kevie. You re-sign Paix at the start of 2023 only to go completely off him mid-way through the season for no discernable reason. It wasn't like Cory's form dropped, if anything it was Billy who had some questionable performances up until that game against Cronulla. If you can remember, Kev gave Billy an extended stint in the middle and he played one of his better games that night. It seemed like Billy's game went from strength to strength, meanwhile Paix was dropped and in spite of Smoothy's wayward start (he was a punching bag for some on here) Cory never got another look in. Cory has to take some responsibility as well. I'd describe his form in QCup as patchy - there are flashes of brilliance but he's never quite been able to put it altogether. Still, the Broncos committed to him. It was there responsibility to make him the best that he can be and if they were so desperate to get rid of him, wouldn't it be in their best interest to make him look desirable? There's always going to be criticism surrounding Billy because of the conflict of interest. There's no shame in that and while I think some of the blame is unwarranted this is a situation where Billy was favoured and received more opportunities than somebody else and it's come back to hurt the club. I'm also not a huge fan of the two-year deal. I'd have to imagine he's on more than Paix, so realistically let's say he's on $500,000. That's a fair chunk of change for somebody who shouldn't be guaranteed a spot in the 17. Let's be generous and say the Broncos only offered Billy the same deal as Paix, that's still $650,000 tied into one position. So whatever argument that can be made in terms of value is out the window. While I'm on my soapbox, it's time to remember that the cap is $11.4 million. The average price divided by 30 is 380,000. Minimum wage is a 135,000 and some clubs are very shrewd with how they operate their squads (did the Broncos even have a Top 30 come July 1st?). So $300,000 is about what you'd expect to pay the average first grade player. Just something to think about because it's easy to get caught up in the past where $300,000 was marquee money.
