I dare say that very few of us didn't have a "childhood hero" we would love to emulate. This may not necessarily be a sports person, but it will most definitely be someone who will in many ways shape your personality. Of course, as we grow up and mature, the goals you mention become as important as the goal you set for yourself to achieve in your career, regardless of what that career may be. I don't expect elite athletes to behave differently from other humans, but I do expect their behavior to be rewarded accordingly. Giving Johns the immortal status is akin to telling our youth that as long as you can kick a ball better than most, your behavior off the field will be overlooked...
