BHQ Loved 5. Steve Renouf 1988-1999 Position: Centre Games: 183 Tries: 142 2011 BHQ Greatest Rank: 6 Highest Vote: 2 (Tommy, GCBRONCO, Porouian) Steve Renouf has cemented his legacy as one of the all-time greats of rugby league with a storied career that saw him dominate on the field for over a decade. Known as the ‘Pearl’ due to his speed and agility, Renouf proved to be a dynamic force on the field that inspired a generation of fans and aspiring players alike. Making his way to Brisbane via his hometown of Murgon, Renouf made his Broncos debut in 1989 and immediately becoming a focal point of the attack. Renouf would see early success with the club, being part of the 1992 and 1993 premierships that the Broncos won by beating St George Dragons on both occasions with Renouf scoring a length of the field try in the '92 decider. Renouf’s partnership with Kevin Walters became the stuff of legend as the two players developed a connection that was seemingly telepathic. Renouf’s lightning speed meant he was able to make swift breaks and score crucial tries, which he did on many occasions. Renouf holds the record for most tries scored for the Broncos with 142. In 1997, Renouf helped the Broncos to secure their third premiership, scoring three tries in the Grand Final against Cronulla Sharks. He then won his fourth premiership in 1998 with the Broncos defeating Canterbury on the big day. Renouf only being denied his 5th grand final try by a poor refereeing decision. Renouf’s success with the Broncos was mirrored on the international stage when he made his Australia debut in 1992. He would go onto score the winning try in the 1992 World Cup final against England and then back those efforts up in the 1994 Kangaroo Tour where he played in all three tests, defeating Great Britain 2-1 in the three match series. After an illustrious career with the Broncos, Renouf moved to the Wigan Warriors in the UK Super League. He would then return to Australia finishing his career with Easts Tigers. In 2012, Renouf was inducted into the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to a man who inspired generations of rugby league fans and players. His legacy in the sport will continue to be felt for many years to come, and he will always be remembered as the ‘Pearl’ of rugby league. BHQ Loathed 5.
