There is a good reason why so many dislike Mundine. Actually there are several reasons why and they are shared by the majority of sports fans and the wider public. Firstly, his self aggrandisement . Not only did he speak of himself in the third person but he claimed to be the greatest and the best. He had no right to do so, that description is ours, the public to bestow. Secondly his achievements were intended for only the 2 % of Australia who were indigenous , something he constantly repeated. As he often said " I'm doin this for mah people ". In short, his racism. Thirdly his poor sportsmanship . He denigrated those who beat him and belittled those he thought inferior ( the rest of humanity ) Fourthly, his idiotic statements following the tragic events of sep11 in America. Coupled with his childlike understanding of world events and his obvious lack of education makes him ill placed to comment. For a lot of us he represents what is wrong with the media circus. He is a clown. Good for an idiotic comment. What I find most offensive about Mundine is his complete and utter inability to be his own man. He read about ( probably had read to him ) Cassius Clay/ Muhammad Ali and tried to live his life rather than his own. Ali claimed to be the greatest and he was. It was a different era and he truly was fighting for black rights. Mundine had no need to fight for those rights, they were in existence already, that fight had been won already. Mundines father was a better fighter and like Lockyer was a humble hero. Mundine converted to the Muslim faith, following the Ali script. If he had of been a lot less of a show off and been his own man and let us decide if he was the best he would probably have been universally loved.
