my 2 cents on Haas and getting him signed to a new contract. Firstly, as you all know I was one of the more vocal opponent's of Haas last year during the contract dispute saga. I do believe that he has learned from that situation. (I do wish he'd get rid of his manager who gave him such bad advice.) now, what we need to remember is that Payne Haas is only 23, still about 5 years from when props tend to hit their primes. he's now not only a meter eater, but he also has started to find an offload and hit's his front quicker ... do we really want this man playing for the opposition. even, when the fans turned on him (and rightly so) he was still close to our best player, even though his form dropped ever so slightly. we shouldn't be comparing Haas and Carrigan. we should be doing what it takes keep them both and build our packs around them. I'm not as convinced as some other that he is ready to walk out on us (maybe the negativity is just force of habit). but: The way the team supported him last year, the fact he is playing footy with his best friend (Patty), the fact that his family situation and personal circumstances have changed, the fact that he's likely realised that to get the halves money he'd need to forgo finals and move to a basket-case club (like the Tigers) all point to us being in a great position to keep him. we'll offer him a fair deal for a prop of his standing. and it should be enough to get him over the line. $1 million a year under the new salary cap is a reasonable figure, IMO. I'm also not convinced the Dolphins will give him an offer significantly bigger (like halves money). Bennett typically doesn't pay big money for props. the Phins will soon realise that they still need to get a marquee spine player, they've just picked up Flegs and Herbie for big money and Gilbert will need a sizable upgrade when he is off contract (same time as Haas, BTW) sorry for the long post 😁
