Half the time they are fed information to pass around to suit an agenda. My two sources write everything down pen and paper, photos/videos/recording when out and about to protect themselves and keep credibility. No doubt some journos are questionable, they more likely drum up a rumour and go shopping it around in a sneaky way to get a response.
