This was a great performance. What impressed me the most was the defence. Sure, Storm had their opportunities, and got within a whisker of scoring a couple of times (Quinn left corner, Slater on the grubber, Quinn on a kick ahead again) but the difference between this week and all but about 3 games this year is the Broncos were applying pressure throughout the sets. That's the key IMO, if you're applying pressure on 99% of tackles, then those 50-50 chances the attack tries that little bit harder to take and that can sometimes lead to error. If you're not applying pressure, then those situations the attacking players feel more relaxed and can take advantage more easily. We've been saying for weeks the Broncos' problem isn't attack, isn't that they're young, it's that there's no plan or effort in defence. That all changed yesterday. With the Storm not able to just rampantly roll forward and through, it meant the Broncos pack was able to muscle up and make some go forward momentum, and look what happened? Lockyer, Norman, Hunt, Folau, Thaiday...they were all able to find space out wide and create opportunities. Norman impressed me heaps at halfback. Hunt impressed me heaps at hooker. Both performances are crucial to keep the rather lacklustre Wallace and McCullough honest (when I say lacklustre, I mean this season). Competition for spots usually inspires urgency. Hunt showed good service out of dummyhalf and is a very useful third kicking option. The big 3: Lockyer, Thaiday and Folau: were absolutely sensational. Thaiday is, IMO, the form back rower in the competition, if not the form forward. And if I can be at all critical of Folau it's that his winger seems like a stranger to him. They just do not play well together - is that Yow Yeh's fault or Folau's? I'd say both. For me the game was won in the first 20 minutes. Storm had all the momentum and possession in that time and yet only came away up 4-0. First opportunity the Broncos got, they scored (thanks to Billy's dirty kick at the ball tactic that should see him suspended for about 16 weeks). And scored. And Scored. And SCORED. Amazing how confidence snowballs into domination. However, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Tits will be a totally different challenge. They were shit yesterday, but they always put in their best for the Broncos and we'll have to work damn hard to challenge their defence. But a performance like yesterday should be enough to get back to back wins for the first time.
