Brisbane Broncos v Penrith Round 3, 1998 This game was billed as a battle of the crafty veteran halfbacks, with Brisbane Broncos' Allan Langer and Penrith's Greg Alexander instrumental to their side's chances. The home side had every reason to be confident heading in to the match, having won their last four against the Panthers in Brisbane. A committed Penrith side travelled to Brisbane intent on stopping the rot, but were also forced to contend with a vintage display from Broncos centre Steve Renouf. Canberra v Manly Round 5, 1998 Canberra and Manly had started the 1998 season in uncharacteristic fashion, both having won just one of their first four games. Both team's desperation to get their seasons back on track was evident, with Manly jumping out to strong lead before Canberra began to claw their way back. The experience of Cliff Lyons and a back row featuring Steve Menzies, Nik Kosef and Daniel Gartner looked to have the Raiders' measure, but Green Machine rookies Mark McLinden and Andrew McFadden weren't prepared to lay down without a fight. Newcastle Knights v Illawarra Steelers Round 21, 1998 Playing in their last season, Illawarra Steelers were contemplating their likely merger with St George. Despite this distraction the Steelers headed up the F3 to take on frontrunners Newcastle Knights, sitting just outside the top 10 on percentage. Trent Barrett's playing future was uncertain and his clash with the Johns brothers would be a key factor in the derby of the steel cities. Andrew and Matthew had dominated the round 3 clash, won 37-18 by the Knights, but if the Steelers were to gain a position in the top 10 they had no option but to roll Newcastle in front of their own adoring Novocastrian crowd.
