Yeah but sure bets aren't always sure bets. Look at Milford, it is easier to say now what a terrible deal it was but at the time everyone was sure he was going to be one of the best in the game. That's the danger with long contracts and especially ones on massive money. No-one wants to admit it because the Titans fans don't want to think about it and Broncos fans hate the management but the Fifita deal is a massive risk. There is a good chance that he continues to improve, stays injury free and comes close to living up to that money. The is also a massive chance that he becomes complacent and/or is weighed down by the expectation that money money brings. When you break it down he is paid something like 40k a game, that is more than what players are paid for origin. You don't get to have off games at 40k a game, hell you don't even get to have good games at 40k a game. At 40k a game you need to be integral to the win. It is easy to remember the games where Fifita busts the line and scores a try that only he can score but we all forget the games where he is barely sighted and does very little. Those games are fine when you are a developing player on reasonable money but by becoming one of the highest paid players ever and the highest paid forward ever he can't have those games. The other concern for Fifita is his whole game is built on strength and agility, outside of that he is low work-rate with no ball playing ability. Strength and agility is all he needs at the moment and maybe he does develop ball playing and ups his workrate. If he doesn't though age and injuries could take that strength and agility and all of a sudden you have a 400k backrower collecting nearly 12% of your salary cap.
