It's amazing how poorly the Tigers have been since winning the premiership in 05 & how Sheens has strayed from what made that side so successful. I don't remember the game caring so much about a club's spine until the 05 victory and their attempt to justify the quality of the side. Yet, since 09, the Tigers haven't stuck with a 'proper' fullback, instead sticking to Moltzen & Ryan aka utilities. Considering the surplus of quality fullbacks in the game, it's amazing the Tigers haven't been in the hunt for somebody and didn't chase a Gerard Beale or somebody of that ilk. Back to 05, Sheens deserves credit for that turn around. He bought reasonably well (Prince, Hodgeson, Richards, Whatuira etc.) and blooded the bulk of the young talent (Marshall, Farah, Heighington, Halatau etc.) that played such an important role in the win. He exploited the quicker play the ball with superior dummy half runners (an exploit their grand final opponents were good at too with Payne, Faiumu & Jensen in particular standing out) & cultivated their confidence that every part of their game (attack, defence) was sound. The problem is, he just over-stayed his welcome. He should have been shown the flick by 08 and unfortunately the Tigers are paying for his poor coaching with some very questionable signings over the past couple of months. They still have plenty of good quality talent coming through (as evidenced by their NYC grand final appearance & SG Ball victory) but they should be ahead of where they're at. Now, if you want to be critical about Sheens, you should take a look at what he did for the Cowboys. One of the biggest coaching flops of all time.
