Dave Smith - NRL CEO

Well said Fourex about the prices. The prices to the games in Brisbane were disgraceful and you know it's bad when Wally and Mal come out and bag the QRL publically about it. Rugby League is traditionally a battlers game and pricing around $250 for a ticket is just ripping of the loyal league loving fans that would give anything to attend.

Disagree a little about the punching thing and I think you will get up me for this. The Gallen V Myles thing got coverage in both states but it got a lot more here simply because the Maroons lost the game and the courier mail etc just spoke about it non stop simply to take the focus of the Maroons average showing as they never looked like winning that game from memory and that the better team won on the day. Banning the biff has taken some of the intensity out of Origin considering how **** poor game 2 was (despite the victory) and the players weren't allowed to let of steam.
Then how do you explain game 1? It was one of the best games in years.

He has his good points and bad points. It really doesn't matter who is in charge because there will always be something wrong with them.

SOO overseas is dumb.

There's literally no further chance for expansion of the series.

Unlike playing a Bledisloe there, which is show casing the international game/southern hemisphere rugby (where Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore based ex-pats are an audience).

I'm not saying I agree with Banker Dave, however there are monetary gains by taking a game overseas. It opens up the opportunity to get sponsors on board who are looking for international exposure. SOO may be shown overseas now, but it's still an Aussie game played by roughnut convicts. Play it overseas and all of a sudden you have an exhibition game where the big international fish are willing to pay big money for stadium signage, jersey exposure, even potential naming rights for that game.

IMO that's not worth throwing more hurdles at players (add in jet lag to their list of issues, with some potentially being required to back up two days after). Nor do I want it to become a circus where its soul is sold to the highest bidder. But it's something that would appeal to a beancounter so wouldn't surprise me.

I don't want SOO to "expand".

It's a NSW v QLD thing.......it should only be played in NSW or QLD.

I don't believe the "weren't allowed to blow off steam" comment.

Why does it have to be fists? Why can't they blow off steam in tackles? Why can't they do what Beetson did in 1980?

That's what I would do if I can't punch, I would find other ways that don't lead to a send off. I would also wait for them to get the ball and give them the biggest hit of their life.

You mean like when Artie punched his old mate Mick Cronin....? LOL

I'll tell you why they can't do that any more,

David Smith.

Unfortunately it's the most marketable part of Rugby League, and lowlife businessmen will attempt to exploit it.

So you'd prefer to see swinging arms to a good old fashioned punch on?

You must have been a big fan of Les Boyd.

The altercation between Beetson and Cronin has been grossly exagerated.

It was a solid tackle.

The actual fight happened between Artie & Wynn.

I never said that.

I was just pointing that I don't believe players are not allowed to blow off steam and that there are other ways to do it.

Such as ?? (keeping in mind, we've discarded your swinging arm theory).

I know.......how 'bout big tackles and huge one on one contacts ???

Nnnuppp !! Can't do that either. Anyone else noticing that the rate of big hits has diminished slightly over the last 12-18 mnths. Players are too concerned that a big hit might go wrong and have it be construed as a shoulder charge.

Can't have shoulder charges anymore now can we

....and who can we thank for that??

David fucken Smith.

Absolutely there could be a cash grab. Play the opening game in London once every 5 years and you'd get 90,000 expats paying $1,000 each packed into Twickenham.

Take Fiji over as a curtain raiser. Have the Exiles versus England as a curtain raiser. Give everyone 2 weeks off to play it.

Time zones - well that's another story.

But my point was SANZAR does it with a strategy of realistic expansion in mind. They want a proper Asia Pacific/South Ameria/Southern hemisphere Rugby Competition. They actually have possibilities of this happening, as opposed to State of Origin which literally has (and only ever should) 2 competitors. Japan is now into the Super 15. 3 or 4 years ago they started taking a Bledisloe

I think international rugby league expansion should focus on the South Pacific islands - but that's a topic for another day. The fact Fiji and PNG have teams in the NSW and QLD Premier divisions is a great step in the right direction.

The shoulder charge was outlawed by the commission before Smith had even been appointed!

O RLY ....?

David Smith was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Rugby League Commission in November 2012

6:01pm Tue 20th November, 2012 - The Australian Rugby League Commission has today accepted a recommendation to outlaw the ‘shoulder charge’ from all competitions from 2013.

O RLY ....?
Yes, "RLY", he was officially appointed on the 23rd of November and didn't start in the job until Feb 2013, he had no part in the decision whatsoever and if you actually read the release you quoted you would know that.
