I know a lot of people here dislike the guy but seriously did anyone rate him on the field and would he have gone as far in his career if it wasn't for his brother's profile in the game?
Wasn't a superstar in the Langer, Stuart or Joey Johns mould but was able to do his job and had his moments at club level. I don't think anybody really rated him as anything more as a player.
As a TV personality, he got over on his own accord. When he burst onto the scene in 2002, his act was fresh and characters like Reg Reagan captured the bogan qualities of Rugby League perfectly. However, like anything on the Footy Show, it was run into the ground and Matty was exposed as a one trick pony. In saying, Matty is naturally charismatic but his insight into Rugby League is limited and his go-to-play is to make bold statements or make cheeky quips at Tallis or Hindy. As a once off, they're okay but Matt unfortunately has the tendancy to draw out a lot of his jokes and they lose their potency. Last week's Wolfman Williams retirement bit was a prime example of this.
I'd take him over Beau Ryan on charisma alone. I really enjoyed Beau Knows in 2010 or whenever it started but his routine became old extremely quickly and as a player he can't really offer that much insight into other teams.
