I can't help but admire Ennis. He's the type of player who puts his all into everything and isn't afraid to fail. When he first came onto the scene, there were question marks over what sort of future he'd have. He had the qualities you'd want in a first grade player, but he didn't quite have the skill-set to be a halfback or the defensive capabilities to be a hooker. He could have easily settled and become a utility player. Going from club to club, living the life and seeing how far he could ride it out. It would have been a real fool's paradise. However, when the opportunity arose, he moved his young family over to Brisbane, because he had the confidence Bennett could get the best out of him. Reading about Ennis' back in those days was exciting. Every year the Courier Mail would write up a piece about the beep test, long-distance, short-distance, they probably had a paper airplane contest back then as well. Ennis was always on the podium. He was one of the Broncos best in those early games that year. It seemed like the Broncos had finally found their replacement for Priddis, only for Ennis to suffer an ACL tear in the Round 5 clash against Souths. Again, those type of injuries can ruin players. Tony Caine, Joel Caine's brother, was never the same after a Steve Price charge down went awry. It took sometime, but by mid-way through 2007, Mick was one of the Broncos best players. He was superb during the Origin period that year. The Broncos had started the season in awful form, after winning the premiership the year before they could not buy back to back wins to save themselves, so when players like Ennis and Parker stood up it made a world of difference. He followed that up with a superb 2008. Outside of Smith, there wasn't a better dummy half that year and he had Brisbane playing some of the most spectacular football you would see. Unfortunately he was a victim of Bennett's absence. Every now and then I find myself wondering what sort of player McCullough would have become if he wasn't thrown into the deep end too early and was shown that bit of confidence to back his ability. Never the less, the Bulldogs got the spoils and in his first season, transformed them from a wooden spoon side into finalists. In fact, had it not been for some controversy in Round 2 where the Bulldogs had 14 players on the field for a late try, they would have finished the year as the best team during the regular season. They reached two grand finals with his help and he's had a similar impact at the Sharks. I understand that the media has painted him into a villain and that's fine. It's all apart of the theatre of the sport, trying to turn it into a Hollywood spectacular. However, as far as current players go, I'd struggle to name 10 more I enjoy. Except for Smithy. Always "except for Smithy".
