In regards to the Fifita signing, while it definitely wasn't a bargain, at least it was a positive signing for them. It instantly turns a weakness into a strength and it brings them a ton of interest they didn't have already. Yes, they've been burned by signings like this in the past but Fifita doesn't have the red flags that D. Taylor and Hayne had. It also buys the Gold Coast a ton of publicity they otherwise wouldn't have and may sway more promising players in SEQLD to avoid the Broncos and go to the Titans. While I agree with others on here that the signing won't transform them into a good team overnight, at least it's something. If they had have spent that money on 3 over the hill players or fringe Origin players they would just be making the same mistakes. Similarly without much in the way of junior football, it isn't like they could scout 5 quality kids and a few senior players to help ease them into first grade, it's just not in the cards this year. The Gold Coast can't afford to be patient either. Brisbane II is on the way and if there is one club that will make way in the competition it'll most likely be them. Right now they've got Mal Meninga and Justin Holbrook involved, these guys have to make something happen, and if they fail to land these quality prospects then that's it for them. They can't wait around 3 years and set things up for the next coach, they need some autonomy and that's what this signing brings. Furthermore, for all this talk about needing spine players, they already brought in Tanah Boyd who is one of the brightest halves prospects coming through. Holbrook needs to bring him in the halves at some point because he has a tremendous combination with Fifita and if you're in the Titans position, you're looking to build the club around them. There's still a ton of question marks over the move and until the 2021 roster is finalised it's difficult to assess the roster. As it stands, it does appear to be a little imbalanced and as we've seen with the Broncos, it's all well and good to have ball carriers but if you don't have the defensive steel it can really hurt you. Even so, for Holbrook it's probably less about 2021 and more about 2022. If the Gold Coast can deliver a promising season and set themselves up for a finals run in '22 then it'll absolutely be considered a success, especially if they continue that into '23.
