Play the entire period, that way it encourages a try instead of a field goal fest. It sucks to lose a big game, from one kick that takes 5 seconds to set up for and that's all she wrote.
Play the full 10 minute, make it extra time, instead of golden point.
I like it for finals and origin matches but if other matches are tied at fulltime the game is a draw and both sides get 1 point each for their efforts. Personally I doubt we would be having this discussion if we won yesterday.
Hate Golden Point, always have, and I would have been a little gutted for the Cowboys if we'd won it in the same fashion, or even if we'd just marched down and scored a field goal off the first set. I don't agree with Bennett's replay the next weekend idea, though - as has been said, should be five minutes either way. Rinse and repeat if necessary. Regular season games should just be draws.
Even the NFL have stepped away from the golden point concept, with each team guaranteed one possession unless a touchdown is scored, and if such a result-oriented culture as the US can do, so should we.
Malcolm Turnbull needs to get a referendum going on this.
Although it did sound like WB was fairly bitter, he has always had this opinion, and I concur with him. I'm fine with a full extra time (2x 10 mins) for finals and Origin, where the highest scoring team wins at the end of the whole extra time period.
There is also absolutely nothing wrong with draws for regular season games.
The fucking GP is nothing more than a shootout lottery, and like someone said, I would've actually felt pretty bad for the Cows, had we managed to win the game in the same fashion. That is no way to decide a Grand Final imo!
Finals have 20 mins of extra time (two 10 min halves). If scores are still locked up, then I could possibly live with golden point or golden try after that, but would probably prefer to keep going with blocks of 10 mins of extra times (two 5 mins halves) until some team wins. Sure this could result in a long game, but it's unlikely it would go beyond the first 20 min extra time anyway.
There is too much luck involved in GP imo. Or probably more correctly one play in GP can have too much influence on the game, compared to the plays in the 80 mins prior to it. Ben Hunt could have had a blinder in the 80 mins regular time, then drops the ball from the kickoff in GP. That one single play of dropping the ball pretty much hands the game to the cowboys. At least if there is another 19 mins to come back from such a mistake, it might make the result a little fairer and the better team is more likely to win. It just seems like with GP it comes down to who can kick the field goal better. Hardly a real indication of the overall game, and it's not even exciting. It's pretty rare for any decent footy to actually get played in GP.
Good on the cowboys for winning, as they just played to the current rules, but no team deserves to lose a GF like the Broncos did.
Yes to extra time for finals only, no to field goals stopping the game (fine if you kick one, it just won't stop the clock). Penalty kicks shouldn't stop the game either. If the game is still tied after the last 10 mins, then just keep playing - I'm not a fan of a replay.
And ban kicking tee's that come up to your knee caps - bring back the sand mound I say.
