On the topic of journalists getting shit wrong, and whether they're "lying" or jumping the gun, I can heartily recommend Kemp's interview with Andrew Webster (SMH) where he discusses how many times he's been blatantly lied to by well known sources (he calls friends), such as player agents, players and coaches and instances of last minutes changes in mind that have made him look stupid.
