Warriors v Sharks Thoughts Overall - The scoreline really reflected the contest. I wouldn't be surprised if both teams had something like 60 tackles inside the opposition 20, as it seemed like both teams went through spurts where they had to keep the opposition out. Warriors scored a late try that should have squared the game up, but the Warriors goal-kicker (forget who it was) missed a very gettable kick, forcing the Warriors to go for the try when they could have gone for a field goal instead. Sharks - It's funny how often NYC sides tend to reflect their NRL counter-parts. The Broncos NYC side for instance tends to basically run the exact same set-plays as the NRL counter-parts, just with different cogs in place so it's typically more effective. The Cronulla NYC side is basically a giant packed masterminded by an elusive dummy half with a smattering of younger talent. They're not really the most cohesive side and have too many mistakes in them to really challenge the top team but they've got a nucleus to really make waves next year and if they can hop on the likes of Savage, Liddicoat, Brailey & Scott they could press for higher honours next year, especially if Tracey (former Schoolboys halfback) recovers from injury. Warriors - Honestly, they should have won this game. On their day, they're still one of the best teams in the competition and while McFadden has chosen to put some of his better talents into the NSW Cup (Aoake, Hingano, Sipley, Roache) they still had enough talent and opportunities to win it. Unfortunately for them, their attention to detail was really poor and I thought their hookers in Lafaele and Sio took some really questionable options just as the Warriors needed to build pressure. As a result, the Warriors have succumbed to their 6th loss at home, and they could drop as low as 8th by the time the weekend is through, pending on other results including tomorrow's Knights v Dragons clash. Speaking of the Warriors, as disappointing as the NYC competition has been, I believe one of the big benefactors has been NZRL which has been able to entice younger players to stick with League. With the NRL's decision to get rid of the competition (a fair decision), I hope they find some way to keep these talents in the game because I believe it's the way to go to help grow the game in that region. I also don't think it's a surprise that the Warriors have been so successful (3 premierships) given the amount of coverage they receive in NZ. Every game is telecasted live through out Sky Sports meaning fairly unheralded players get an opportunity to star. If the NRL offered the same spotlight to say Melbourne, North Queensland, Gold Coast or Canberra, I wonder how it would affect their junior development and retention?
