JAMES Roberts is one scandal away from having his NRL contract torn up after being fined $20,000 by the Broncos for his latest drunken transgressions. The Courier-Mail can reveal Roberts is at risk of having his registration to play in the NRL cancelled if he is embroiled in another major off-field incident. On Wednesday the NRL agreed to a package of measures imposed by the Broncos — including a hefty fine and a personal-development plan — after Roberts was involved in two alcohol-fuelled incidents. Broncos chief executive Paul White declined to speculate on whether Roberts, sacked twice previously by Souths and Penrith, is on his last chance at Red Hill. But it is understood the NRL has put Roberts on notice that the governing body won’t tolerate any more incidents that bring the game into disrepute. An NRL source said Roberts’ registration would be reviewed if he committed another breach of his obligations relating to off-field conduct. The NRL is losing patience with him. In 2014, the NRL integrity unit imposed a 12-month alcohol ban on Roberts, which expired in March 2015, but another alcohol-related scandal will see the Broncos centre kicked out of the NRL. Roberts is free to take his place against Melbourne on Friday night at AAMI Park, but White said the Broncos acted strongly by dishing out the biggest fine in the club’s history. “We want to respond in a way that I’m not sitting here again,” White said. “The NRL will also have a view of multiple offences and we are well aware of those. The heavy onus is on James to turn things around and make a positive contribution. “I’ve looked James in the eye and I wanted to make sure he was as committed as I was. Hopefully he can have a long-term future with our club, but I’m not going to comment on last chances.” The Broncos have made Roberts pay a heavy price, literally, for two alcohol-fuelled incidents in the past month. One drunken misdemeanour saw Roberts issued an infringement notice for public nuisance. Despite his slew of alcohol-related sagas, he will not be placed on a booze ban. But the Broncos will subject Roberts to a strict personal-development plan that involves counselling and community work on his days off. “It will be an onerous one — he has put himself in this position but we will respond in a way that’s meaningful to the community. He needs to put back into the community,” White said. “We’re not going to sit here and say we’ll impose an alcohol ban, if James chooses to do that, we’ll support that. “But we have put together a full and complete plan which not only deals with the welfare of the player but has some responsibility placed on him for the breach of community standards. “My accountability is to make sure this plan succeeds.” No Cookies | The Courier Mail
