GRAND final heartbreak player Josh McGuire will return to pre-season training two weeks before most of his Broncos clubmates. McGuire will step up his mission to restore himself as the No. 1 Broncos prop next season after an achilles tendon rupture ruined his involvement in Brisbane’s premiership charge. McGuire returns to training on Monday week, with most of his workout mates to be Queensland Cup and under-20 players. The majority of Brisbane’s beaten grand final side will resume training on November 30. The club’s four New Zealand internationals, who have two more Tests to play in England, are not expected back at Red Hill until the second week of January. McGuire’s efforts to be considered for the grand final against North Queensland were rebuffed by Broncos staff who were adamant that three months were not enough to repair the tendon enough for duty in an NRL game. The 25-year-old made his Queensland Origin debut this year but injury in June in an NRL match sidelined him for the rest of the season. It left him and Broncos fans wondering what difference he could have made in a finals run and a grand final lost in golden-point extra time. McGuire averaged 126 run metres and 33 tackles a game for the Broncos this year. Fighting with McGuire for minutes next season will be two forwards who became more prominent in his absence, Jarrod Wallace and Joe Ofahengaue. Sam Thaiday, a reluctant prop, will be hoping he is able to play more in an edge position next season. Ofahengaue, 20, played the last nine games of the campaign off the bench.
