It's hard when the person involved seems a decent person. But, ... Before being appointed, astute judges - https://www.sportingnews.com/au/league/news/league-great-doubts-walters-nrl-coaching-nous/zz3zxvvd3jgs1p2ztzsj5fe4k - warned that there was no evidence that Kev could coach. He wanted the job, because "I love this club", but was he seriously considered for any other first grade coaching roles ? Was he really qualified to be given the role ? Is the outcome then surprising ? It's interesting to review his comments from when he was appointed. It's hard to conclude anything other than he is in way over his head, and probably shouldn't have been put in this position in the first place but the Board was weak in the face of "the old boys". All the references below are from https://www.nrl.com/news/2020/09/30/walters-named-coach-i-can-unite-broncos-and-return-to-finals-next-year/ 1 "That is my first objective, to get in and unite the club again. With everyone working in the same direction it is amazing what results you can come up with." 2 Walters will no doubt make some roster tweaks at the Broncos but he is adamant he has the players at his disposal to revive the club’s winning ways. The likes of Anthony Milford, Corey Oates and Joe Ofahengaue are in need of a second wind in their careers and Walters has coached them at the Maroons and as an assistant to Bennett at Brisbane. He knows what makes them tick. 3 Walters insists the Broncos can be the big movers of the 2021 season and play finals football at least."That is my expectation. When you think about the Broncos you think of a winning culture and that is what we will return the club to". All of the above comments just look foolish given the passage of time. As does his insistence that we have improved from last year when clearly things are worse and regressing. Enough is enough. The Broncos deserve more than "I should be coach because I love this club and I will cry if I don't get the job". Any score more than 1 out of 10 is ludicruos; the facts are we are running last and the club is in disarray. Suggesting what we see today is the same as four years ago (when we lost a grand final in the last minute), as Kev did on Friday night, just highlights how far away from being in a position to deal with the issues he really is. As I started, none of this is to criticise Kev as a human and a legend of the club. For both of those factors, he should be afforded dignoty and respect. But, as a coach, he should never have been put in the position, but he was, and the high price for that ludicrous decision is now being paid.
