The media are patched into the police radios and most of them would actually have 'crime reporters' who look at every call out to see if it's something reportable - alleged sexual assault at a nightclub would always attract media attention and from there it wouldn't take much questioning to get that some high profile sportspeople were involved which leads to further media digging.
