Match #4 North Queensland Cowboys vs South Sydney This was a nice win to the Cowboys after a couple of crummy weeks in the competition. Basically they sailed to an early 14 point lead and held onto it relatively well despite Souths challenging late. Cowboys were basically untouchable inside the opening 10 minutes, even their kick off proved to be a real pain in the ass for Souths and I think they had something like 7 sets of six in a row during that rampage. Some positive signs there for them too - Rona did well to bat a ball back to Wright for the opening try, JT combined with Tariq for a simple fringe try and then Winterstein scored a controversial try to extend the lead. For me, it was one of those ones where the on-field decision had to be respected either way. I thought Curtis/Wright filled in really well for the injured Tate and with the addition of Moga, I'm actually sort of excited for the future of the Cowboys backline. Morgan has proved to be a real surprise packet at fullback, Wright and Winterstein are two really solid backline additions, Rona has some strong attributes and Moga could be a star. The only member of the backline I don't really rate is Linnett who I feel is like their Reed but he's OK and has his moments. It's a real improvement from like 2010 or so. Souths just seemed too spotty on the night. Too busy playing out football and not making the most of their opportunities when they were offer. Just forever working to the next play and funny enough that's how they scored their two tries - two kicks destined for the in-goal with just a nice bounce and a good chase or a soft run through the middle. Merritt was also bad, so there's that too. They were missing some troops Souths - no Walker, Auva'a or Georgie Burgess and think they were a bit rusty coming off the bye. I suspect they'll pelt the Titans again this weekend and they'll be there abouts come the finals. As for the Cows, think it was just a spirited game from them. Liked what I saw from their backs, their forwards held up their end of the bargain and JT played well. I just think they're one good hooker off doing something special. Kostjasyn would be my contender for the worst hooker in the competition, but Cows just have to make do.
