BRONCOS prop Josh McGuire is aiming for a shock grand final return after rupturing his Achilles in round 16, less than three months ago. McGuire has stepped up his rehab in recent weeks and is back jogging on the treadmill. That leaves him with plenty of hurdles to leap before he’s back in the frame for selection but McGuire refuses to give up completely. “The Achilles is going really well. I’m already jogging now and I like to tell all the boys that I’ll be back for the grand final,” McGuire told the Fox NRL Market Watch podcast this week. “Fingers crossed. I like to believe that I can give myself every opportunity. “ ... Realistically no, but I always have that self-belief that I’m going to keep pushing it as hard as I can and you’re never going to want to rule yourself out of a grand final if you’ve got an opportunity to play in one.” Brisbane are up to their necks in premiership contention, finishing the regular season in second place. Their finals campaign kicks off on Saturday with a blockbuster qualifying final match up with Queensland rivals the Cowboys, putting them potentially two wins away from a first grand final since 2006. But underlining the importance of McGuire to the side, they have won just five of their nine games since he went down with the Achilles injury. That ratio is far lower than their 17 wins and seven losses over the course of the season, with coach Wayne Bennett no doubt aware of the value McGuire adds to his forward pack. With that in mind, even the slimmest chances of recovery will be closely monitored and in McGuire’s corner is Justin Hodges and Darius Boyd, who have both rehabilitated serious Achilles injuries. “Obviously (Justin Hodges) did his as well as Darius Boyd — so definitely been picking their brains a lot,” McGuire said. “There’s little things that work for me that didn’t work for Hodgy, but we’re all different. We all heal differently. “Darbs (Boyd) especially, his knowledge and how professional he is with his rehab has been really good, I’ve been talking a lot to him.” Any kind of hope is worth clinging onto but in the more likely event that McGuire doesn’t get back into the selection picture this season, he is still keen to contribute. “It is hard, it’s definitely hard watching from the sideline. If I get too filthy I just yell out from the sideline and spray blokes with a bit of heckling, McGuire laughed. “You just stay involved and I’m at all the meetings and heckling around the coffee shop, getting that bit of team culture around as much as I can.” http://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-premiership/injured-prop-josh-mcguire-reveals-he-is-still-hopeful-of-grand-final-return-for-brisbane-broncos/story-e6frf3pc-1227521093332
