Brisbane forward Kobe Hetherington will get an early chance to prove himself in the No.13 jersey, and the move has the backing of club legend Trevor "The Axe'' Gillmeister. Hetherington wants to play lock this year after spending most of his career on the bench, which would lead to Test forward Pat Carrigan switching to prop. The 25-year-old will get an opportunity to impress head coach Michael Maguire in the NRL Pre-Season Challenge clash with Gold Coast in Toowoomba on Sunday, with Carrigan rested until the following week. Hetherington has been referred to by captain Adam Reynolds as the team "cattle dog" for his relentless drive and "bite" he provides defensively. There was no better defender than dual premiership-winning Broncos great Gillmeister, who senses a kindred spirit in Hetherington. "Kobe is a no-nonsense type of player. He doesn't need pats on the back, but he is one of those players you like playing with," Gillmeister told AAP. "As an old forward, I know watching him that wingers when they look up on that first carry and see Kobe, they think, 'I am not running there'. "That's what we all wanted to be like, players that didn't want (opponents) to run the ball at us. "'Madge' (Maguire) would love a player like him, and I think he will thrive under Madge." Gillmeister said that "without a doubt" Hetherington could make a go of lock, but said Maguire must be patient and allow him time to settle. "I would have liked to see him get a bit more game time the last couple of years, but they are going to have to have a bit of patience with him," he said. "They need to leave him out there. He is going to get a bit tired and fatigued, so they need to give him time to be in a position where you don't stop. "I know the game has changed with the rotation system, but I would like to see him play 60 or 70 minutes because the Broncos are a better side when he is on the field." In other Broncos team news, Billy Walters has been named to play at five-eighth after spending time there this pre-season. Tyson Smoothy gets another crack as starting hooker, while Jack Gosiewski and Brendan Piakura get their first hitouts in the hotly contested second-row position.
