I don't want Green as Maroons coach. With that said, I don't understand the Steven Bradbury comparison. I understand there's a lot of bitterness and resentment but Green has done a really good job at the Cowboys and unlike Stuart who inherited a great squad in a prime position to win a premiership, Green had to make some tough choices. For instance, when Lachlan Coote went down at the 2014 Auckland 9s, that could have easily been the Cowboys entire season down the drain. However, instead of fretting on it, Green went with Morgan and as a result was really able to develop him into a representative standard player. Similar story with Taumalolo who went from a good prospect to one of the best forwards in the game (albeit, he's overrated. There's no way he had a better year than Corey Parker as per the Dally Ms). He's also made a ton of astute signings. The likes of Granville, Lowe & Asiata were great blue-chip pick-ups and gave him room to bring up guys like Hannant & O'Neil who were desperate for a change of pace. Where as Henry usually brought in whatever talent he could get his hands on to compliment his stars, Green brought in a bunch of under-valued players and justifiably reaped the rewards. If I had any gripe with him as a coach, and this is crucial at Origin is that I don't think he's great at getting his teams up for the big games. I know that's an odd thing to say about a guy who just won a Grand Final, but consider some of the Cowboys losses this season. Round 1 vs Roosters Round 3 vs Broncos Round 22 vs Cronulla Round 23 vs Souths Round 25 vs Melbourne Finals Week 1 vs Broncos All big games and yet the Cowboys failed to play their best footy in most of them. I thought they played well against the Broncos, but were simply out-classed on that particular evening. Stephen Bradbury? Nah, he's more mystical than that. How about Houdini? Consider all the games where the Cowboys were able to pull a rabbit out of the hat. Round 4 vs Melbourne - JT with the ultimate clutch performance Round 7 vs Warriors - Granville stealing the win from the Warriors Round 9 vs Bulldogs - Morgan running away with the victory Round 12 vs Manly - Granville/Coote combining for a dramatic victory Round 13 vs Eels - Biggest comeback of the season Round 21 vs Raiders - Another comeback performance, from 18-4 down to 32-24 victors. And of course the Grand Final with THAT play. While it's good to have players fight until the final whistle, you really don't want to find yourself in that position as often as the Cowboys did. Especially at Origin level where defensive resolve is key and once you lose momentum it's incredibly hard to wrestle it back.
