What a game. When Smith scored and they missed the two, I felt they'd left too much time. And then they hold them to a fourth and 2, and... goddamn Kittle. I felt the turning point was the two third down penalties that extended the Niners' last touchdown drive. That always seems to happen to the Saints at the most inopportune times. Not saying they were bad calls, although the UR flag was unlucky -- not much CGJ could do to avoid it. Forcing a punt or field goal there would have made a huge difference to the outcome, I think. That, and the offensive PI call on Thomas that pushed them out of field goal range and led to the failed fake punt. Oh, and only turning the pick into three points and not seven. A lot of missed opportunities that might have made the game not so tight at the end. Losing Cook early hurt as well, given the impact he's been having lately, and was already having on this game before he went out. He might have been the difference in some of the third down misses later in the game. Having Klein and Alonso out didn't help either, particularly in covering short throws over the middle, particularly to Kittle. Also, as much as I love Taysom Hill, some of his third and short snaps are just so badly telegraphed it's painful to watch. Another one today in a fairly important spot. They've got to mix some play action throws in there and occasionally hand the ball off to create at least some doubt about whether or not he's going to keep it. I know he broke off the big TD run last week, but it sure feels like he's getting pulled down for a loss just as often. A smart team will spy him every time he's in on those type of downs. I still think Seattle will win the West, so we might see a rematch in the Dome come January, and honestly I won't feel too great about that. But it sure would make for another great game.
