Nope... they have discretion to call a penalty whenever they want... It's a myth that any time they call a penalty it has to be a professional foul, that was just a **** up from the very first press conference when they were answering the questions about teams giving away constant and/or deliberate six agains to avoid penalties, etc. Whoever it was said something along the lines of "if a team is deliberately giving away six agains the referee can still call a penalty and if deemed necessary they can also sin bin the player for a professional foul"... the media took that as any time a penalty is called for repeat offences then it has to be a sin bin and that's basically the only interpretation the ref have run with. Article below is from back in 2020 in regards to the rules when they were brought in: https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/how-controversial-new-rules-have-changed-the-way-the-game-is-played-20200604-p54zds.html Regardless Bhunt gave away at least two professional fouls in the one tackle; first was the initial flop on Tapine well after the tackle was completed and second was the second effort in the ruck in an attempt to slow the play down... I'd say he also wasn't square at marker, which is another blatant professional foul... so that's 3 professional fouls in 1-2 tackles. Apparently they were also offside on the play where Tapine received it, so that's 4 professional fouls in 1-2 tackles. They have shown already that if a player gives away a blatant penalty near the end of the game then it is a professional foul for a penalty and the player is binned. TPJ did it last year or the year before... he may have already done it twice by now. Annersley indicated that a penalty should've been awarded and Bhunt could have been binned for a professional foul.
