Both teams were guilty of it last night, it was a shitshow. What can NRL refs do to stop it? In the NHL refs can send players off for Embellishment. In most cases this happens when someone is trying to sell a penalty, and both players will be sent off. But the penalties in ice hockey are only 2mins, and if they are coincidental then it doesn't really affect the game at all. The players called for Embellishment are also likely to fined after the game ($2000 or something like that, but their salary cap is also much higher). It's hard to bring anything like this into rugby league because of the interchange system. The ref could send a player off to a doctor's bench as soon as they stay down, stay off for 5mins to get their injury checked. The problem with the NRL is coaches always find ways to manipulate rules, like I don't think this would work because they would figure out how to get free interchanges or some sort of advantage. It seems like there's a need for something lesser than an HIA, that discourages players from acting injured to draw a call. Maybe the solution is to take the player off to be checked with no player replacement. If they're not hurt they will play on, if they're hurt they will want to see the doctor.
