Code-hopping star Jarryd Hayne, club captains Will Zillman and Nathan Friend, Greg Bird, Luke Douglas, Zeb Taia, Chris McQueen, Nene MacDonald, Nathan Davis, Matt Robinson, Daniel Mortimer and Matt Srama were all seen at the races with Bloomfield. The bikie was seen entering and leaving a private suite booked by Titans players and joking with several of them in the corporate area where they bought drinks and placed bets. Gold Coast Turf Club interim chief executive Richard Towson confirmed the Titans players attended the race meeting. “They arrived after lunch and left at around 5.30pm,” he said. “They were really well behaved. “I couldn’t say a better word about how well behaved and polite they were on the day.” The players left the races on a bus and a group that included Bloomfield went to Macdonald’s home. A video emerged that night of Bloomfield flashing a huge wad of cash, saying “Sweet. Haynesy just gave me five grand” and the pair enjoying listening to Eminem’s Lose Yourself together. Haynes yesterday released a statement saying, “This money was not mine.” “This was a prank initiated by Bloomfield and was not intended to be taken seriously.” The Gold Coast’s top bikie-busting detective expressed dismay yesterday at the footage, saying “(Hayne) is a big commodity in this city and people look up to him and it’s really disappointing to see him associating with people involved in criminal motorcycle gangs”. Taskforce Maxima acting detective senior sergeant Nigel Bull said sports stars needed to avoid being unintentionally used by gang members who wanted to be photographed with them because it was good for recruitment. “They get the notoriety and it’s good for recruitment and it’s good for their PR,” he said. “These pictures of sports stars next to Hells Angels colours increases their value and makes them a better commodity. “You know, it’s, ‘I will go and join the Hells Angels because I might get to party with the Hayne Plane’.” Mr Bull said Taskforce Maxima would officially investigate the footage of Hayne and Bloomfield, a former under-20 Titans player. NRL sources said the game’s integrity unit was already investigating Bloomfield’s links to top-flight players after viewing several social media posts. Hayne and MacDonald will be hauled before the NRL Integrity Unit and ordered to explain the incident. The Titans yesterday said they launched an internal investigation and hoped the events of the weekend would not detract from a successful season. “The Gold Coast Titans board and management make no criticism of our players for having end-of-season drinks, as is the tradition in many other clubs and codes, in a function room and then in a private home,” the Titans said in a statement. “However, the club and our players have learned a powerful lesson from this event. As a direct result the club will be seeking briefings from senior Gold Coast police involved in the crackdown on bikies. “We will put in place a structure so that our players are better equipped to distance themselves from individuals who seek to associate with them.” The Titans said the event was not isolated to their club. “The Rugby League Players Association in conjunction with the NRL have been very strong in relation to educating and protecting players from external influences which could reflect badly on them and the game. We are co-operating with the NRL Integrity Unit and the RLPA in this regard,” the club said in its statement. “The Gold Coast Titans have made enormous strides on and off the field and we take how we are perceived very seriously. We have worked very hard to develop a team that this city can be proud of. “The events on the weekend should not detract from what has been a very successful 2016.”
