COREY Oates will need a medical clearance to be picked for Queensland after suffering dizzy spells and an irregular heartbeat in the Broncos’ 19-18 loss to the Cowboys on Friday night. The hulking Brisbane winger will undergo scans in the coming days to rule out any heart-related medical condition after he lasted just 40 minutes of the Queensland derby. Oates’ setback in Townsville came just four days after he attended the funeral of his 76-year-old grandfather Harold, who passed away after suffering a heart attack last Monday week. The 21-year-old will be chosen in the Maroons side named this Tuesday, but Broncos medicos will fully examine Oates before he gets the green light for his Origin debut in Sydney on Wednesday week. Broncos chief executive Paul White said club doctors are comfortable with Oates’ condition but will take every precaution after he reported feeling unwell midway through the derby. “We did some tests straight after the game and he seemed fine. But we will be monitoring him during the week,” White said. “He possibly suffered a head knock early in the first half, there may have been some delayed issues so we’ll keep an eye on him.” Oates finished the first half but upon entering the sheds, the winger complained of dizziness and a ‘racing’ heartbeat. The Maroons hopeful watched the second stanza from the Broncos bench before he and centre James Roberts were summoned by ASADA officials for a random drugs test after fulltime. Oates appeared in good spirits yesterday returning to Brisbane with teammates and will be confident of getting the thumbs up to clinch his maiden Maroons jumper. “He saw the doctor (yesterday) morning after we did rehab,” forward Sam Thaiday said. “I don’t ask too many questions with ‘Oatesy’ ... he always seems out of it.” It has been a stressful week for the Broncos winger, who was given time off to attend his grandfather’s funeral in central Queensland on Monday before returning to training. Oates’ mother Janette said her son had no history of heart problems and believes the Townsville heat could have been responsible for his dizzy spells. “As his mum, it would be a concern naturally if it was a heart thing, but he’s never had a heart problem, not even as a child,” Janette said. “I suppose we will find out more this week. All I know is he got a slight head knock. Hopefully he’s OK. I spoke to him just before the game and he mentioned it was pretty hot so maybe that affected him. “It’s been a hard week for us all. Corey’s grandfather, my father, passed away last Monday (week) and Corey came to the funeral. “He had a heart attack, he had a bit of an issue with sugar, he got diagnosed in 1988 and his heart has been failing him for a while. “It would be fabulous if Corey makes the Origin team, we’re a close family so we would all be thrilled.” Broncos skipper Corey Parker will enter Camp Maroon this week and expects Oates to join him after the 106kg flyer’s rampaging start to the season. “I have no doubt if Corey is picked (for Queensland) he would relish the moment,” Parker said. “There is a lot of teammates he knows at the Broncos who would be around to help him. “Corey is big and strong and in Origin you need that. He would do a good job.” No Cookies | The Courier Mail
