There's always that brief window during the off-season where I try to wonder why I was so burnt out on Rugby League and find myself really looking forward to Round 1. Then these clickbait articles start emerging on twitter and I'm quickly reminded. As far as seasons with less than four established halves pairings, my first guess was 2016 since you had a lot of big moves like Foran to Eels, Maloney to Sharks, Hodkinson to Knights, Sezer to Raiders, Taylor to Titans etc. but you still had around 7 halves. I think that in itself is an interesting narrative heading into the season. Last year 14/16 clubs halves pairings had played together, the only exclusions were the Wests Tigers and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. Even with Wests, Mbye and Doueihi had played in the spine together with Brooks, they just played at fullback so it wasn't that difficult to get a gauge.
