[QUOTE="Coxy, post: 2257765, member: 1764"] My concern is that we've let a lot of those older, developed players who know the Broncos culture inside and out go in recent years. The list is quite staggering when you look at it: Shaun Berrigan Dane Carlaw Petero Civoniceva Casey McGuire Karmichael Hunt Brent Tate David Stagg Brad Thorn Then there's guys that have come to the club or only been in the top grade for a couple of years, given good service, then left before really establishing themselves in the Broncos framework: Michael Ennis Ben Hannant Dave Taylor Then there's the guys that have retired and are not really still involved with the playing group: Tonie Carroll Shane Webcke Who have we replaced them with? Ben Te'o Lagi Setu Ashton Sims Joel Clinton (who's now all but gone anyway) Peter Wallace Those were rookies/just starting out (Setu, Te'o, Wallace), or have for several years been underachievers for their clubs (Clinton, Sims). I don't see the point in jumping to secure someone like the above when they come on the market. The Broncos of the 1990s built their success by SMART recruitment (when not politically motivated...*cough* Mundine *cough*). Glenn Lazarus - 3 successive grand finals with the Raiders, the world's best prop, and the Broncos NEEDED to give their pack some grunt and respect. Perfect. Darren Smith - a brilliant performer for Canterbury since his debut in 1991 or 1992, Broncos got him in 1995 and he was outstanding for the 4 seasons he was with us. Gorden Tallis - partly political at the time, but he always wanted to play with the Broncos and he was one of the most ferocious back rowers, again at a time when the Broncos pack was unable to compete in the big games (bundled out cheaply in 1995 and 1996). Iconic players. Players you can build your team around. Nobody can seriously say someone like Joel Clinton was going to be a cornerstone you could build a pack around. Or Setu or Te'o or Sims in the backrow. Or Wallace at halfback (though he's been solid if not spectacular). What's my rambling point? Well, unless there's a Lazzo, Gordie or Smith that's at their peak, looking for a new club, and will help our team lift to another level, then spend the money developing what we have. We all acknowledge we could use some experience in the pack. As great as Kenny is, he's not ready to be the forward leader yet. But go through the teams and think of players who really fit the description of what we want: - Experience (club, finals and rep) - Aura/reputation for being tough, uncompromising, damaging - Mature - a leader, either current or potential - Peak or reaching their peak - at least another 4 years in their career To be totally honest, I can't think of any who I'd desperately want to get to the Broncos.
