I can't speak on behalf of others, but I knew going in that it was fake. I had my own misconceptions about the product that prevented me from watching it, but then I had somebody else introduce me to it and found it entertaining. Back then, television wasn't what it is these days, and it was one of the more entertaining shows on television.
