Reports Triple M's Ray Warren To Retire At The End Of 2016 | NRL | Triple M

Triple M’s Ray 'Rabs' Warren, the voice of rugby league, is set to hang up the microphone from all calling duties at the end of this season.

The elder statesmen of rugby league commentary broke the news at the NRL season launch on Thursday.

"Fifty and out. I like that," Warren told Fairfax Media.

"I'm thinking this season will be it for me, I'm thinking that way.”

The Triple M Dead Set Legends host admitted he’s been in bad health for a while.

"I'm thinking if I can get through this year it would be good. I've had the prostate problem, hernias and God knows what operated on," said Rabs.

"You're in hospital with all the footballers in the off season."

Good timing by Fox Sports to televise all 8 games, I won't be watching a single Channel 9 game in 2017 with no Rabs.

That's sad, but he has to look after himself. I'm a big fan of Rabs, for me, there's no one better to watch the game under than him. All the other 9 commentators suck as main callers. Hadley is awful, Gilbert is a cure for insomnia, and that new guy (I don't remember his name) is alright, but certainly nothing special.

Surely there's better talent out there?

Will be sad when he hand up the mic. He is the voice of RL and really what I associate NRL with. Crickey still hasn't felt the same without Richie.

It's been a long time coming. He is a magnificent iconic commentator but he has been on the decline for a while, making plenty of errors.

I think I read somewhere recently that 9 was chasing Warren Smith to replace Ray Warren as the lead commentator.

Get Billy Birmingham to do it. He's a league fan, has Rabs' voice and his eyes work. Plus he's on the Sunday Triple M show sometimes so he's got experience working with wankers.
 
Channel 9's commentary just keeps getting worse.

As much as it begrudges me to do so, I'll be watching on Fox Sports from now on.
 
It's a beat up. Something that was said in passing according to Hadlee who went on to say that he is not and will never be a part of any succession plan. He calls RL as a fill in only and as a diversion to his main job on talk back radio, because it's fun.

Haha, was listening to that as well. My spirits were lifted when I heard it.

I would love to watch Fox Sports..

But 9 have me by the balls. The HD was great.. And I don't have the HD package on Foxtel.

Once you go HD, you can never go back.
