Going back a few decades here, but the representative season used to be a lot longer than it currently is. Straight after the Origin season, Australia would typically have a series against Great Britain or New Zealand that would last a good month or so (including matches against PNG or a local NZ team). Despite being more ardious, the best of the best would play in those games with little question. That all changed around the early to mid-90s when players started receiving bigger contracts from their clubs. Now the clubs have way too much at stake and the international game suffers because of it. I'm not sure how you can get away with it in the modern game. Maybe if you included 4 new teams in the domestic competition it could make the difference? If you cut the competition down to 20 rounds, you'd just about make up the difference in total number of games. Unfortunately the timing of this Test match couldn't have been worse. Not only did the Eels drama hit at the worst time, the Warriors have been absymal so nobody takes them seriously. On top of that, there was the Radradra controversy which in the grand scheme of things isn't that controversial, at least compared to other international codes but I think it hurt the perception of Australia among their fanbase. Australian fans have tall poppy syndrome/like to support the underdog and that's difficult to do when Australia is so dominant and will stoop to any move to win games.
