I dont quite get the croft hate. Yes he is not the most experienced half about and there are still areas to work on in his game, but with 40 nrl games, 35+ Q Cup games and having worked under cronk for sometime, we could do much worse. You would also struggle to find a comparable half for 350-370k (which would be the most i would be looking at given the salary cap state). I also think he was dropped not particularly for poor form but because of papenhuyzens performance and melbournes lack of need for an organising half because they have smith (so can go with 2 running halves). Dearden is a prospect but he needs some time in the reserves playing against men and learning to be an organising/dominant half (from what i heard, he wasnt the dominant half in the Q Cup games he played this year). In 1.5- 2 years he may be ready When we look at other dominant half options with nrl experience, they are either not likely too move or too expensive. Roosters- cronk (retiring), keary (not leaving) Canberra- sezer (he was my initial thought but i was underwhelmed with his game on friday, his kicking was pretty poor (raiders best kicks were from hodgson). He is also in the team because of sam williams injury). Sam williams (havent seen much of him). Souths- Reynolds (not moving and too expensive) Manly- DCE (not moving and too expensive) Cronulla- townsend (not moving) Parra- moses (not moving and too expensive) Tigers- brooks and benji (not moving and retiring next year) Bulldogs- foran (i am not sure if bulldogs are still looking to move him on, but his injury and off-field personal issues are a concern. I think he would struggle away from sydney.) Warriors- green (not moving or too expensive) Penrith - cleary (not moving), maloney (gone) Cowboys- morgan (not moving and too expensive), clifford (still young, not sure when his contract expires, probably asking too much) Titans- jacks (less nrl experience, as good as he is going to get and not the potential croft has), roberts (i thought he would have been a good pick up in 2017-18, but dont see the titans letting him go), taylor (think he might be a couple years off returning to form and may not have the maturity to manage the scrutiny of being a bronco 7) Knights- pearce not moving and too expensive Dragons- norman and hunt (not moving and too expensive). We can only do so much in a limited market.
