ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS 20 (Widdop, Mann, Rein tries; Widdop 4/5 goals) defeat MELBOURNE STORM 10 (Vunivalu 2 tries; Harris 1/3 goals) Unfortunately for Melbourne, with so many stars out, this proved to be a bad match up for them. If they were any chance of winning this round, they had to invite a team into an arm-wrestle and wait them out. Unfortunately they drew the Dragons, a team that thrives in this situation and they had the Storm's measure through out the contest. Even when Vunivalu produced another sensational effort to score in the corner, there was this feeling that St George would respond. As it turned out they went bang bang with Lafai producing a skilful offload for his winger Kurt Mann to score, before Rein was able to take advantage of some exhausted A-defenders to put the game beyond doubt. For St George, it was just a matter of getting the job done minus Josh Dugan and Tyson Frizell. For Melbourne, they got a taste of what life was like without Cooper Cronk, Cameron Smith and Cameron Munster. While they were missed, I don't think Bellamy is going to be too upset. They handled the game well defensively, conceding just the one fluke try to Gareth Widdop and created opportunities. Melbourne would have taken a lot out of that game. If they had have been more patient with their chances, they would have posted points which would have made all the difference. As it was, they made poor decisions at key intervals but those are the type of lessons you only learn on the fly at this level. For some, it maybe their last opportunity. Melbourne continue to develop talent at an alarming rate, they do it better than anyone, and I think a few players will be lucky if they're considered again. All in all, St George are well and truly in the mix while Melbourne demonstrated they're not a complete laughing stock without key players. It's sort of what most expected.
