Vlandys and co have to recognize, as I was getting at with saying I appreciated both the blow-outs and the grinds in the mix but not one clearly dominating in terms of regularity, that a balance has to be struck somewhere. The 6 again, for me the worst thing about that is teams who deliberately concede on Tackle 1 so they have to endure a 7 tackle set having gotten their shit together in the next 6 tackles. I've never been a wild fan of the 7 Tackle 20 Metre rule when a ball from an attacking kick goes dead, especially when it just goes over the dead ball line. That's bad luck. Not intentional "Don't let their fullback get the ball and run, boot it bloody hard and kick it dead" thinking. I realise it would be bloody hard to adjudicate, which might make this rule more trouble than it's worth, but I think that rule should only apply when a kick is put in within the opposition's 20m line. Or maybe you simply say "Conceding 20 metres on the defending team's set is bad enough" and dump the 7 tackle rule. And I do think some fans - Bulldogs being the prime example this week, might be Warriors next Sunday - are using the "Bloody Vlandys' stupid bloody rules are screwing my team!" excuse a bit too freely. The rules might not be helping your team, but some of what happened last night against the Sea Eagles just wasn't acceptable, whatever the rules are.
