To me Parra were just too good. They beat us through Moses kicking game and their kick chase. If the revised refereeing means no more penalties to get you out of your own end then kick chase becomes one of the most important requirements to winning the field position battle. Whilst we kicked to corners well enough our kick chase wasn't putting enough pressure on their back 3... not in respect to competing for the ball, but putting heavy defence on the winger as soon as they catch it. On the other hand Parra's kick chase hemmed us into our corners and we seemed to be coming off our own line the entire night. Parra's back 5 were also far better at helping out their forwards... which will be another aspect that becomes important in the new "no penalties" NRL world, as the middle forwards will be fatigued from defending. It's in this respect that I'm most disappointed with Oates. Moses intentionally kicked to Oates all night and he basically fell into their game plan... Oates can't sit there and think that his job is done just because he's retrieved the ball. His main job is to take big hitups on tackles 2/3 to help the forwards until they get back... if they kick to him all night it's because they don't want him having a hitup later in the set. He needs to reload after retrieving the ball and take a second hitup later in the set. In the end it's difficult to get a gauge on where we're at given we had not only no ball, but also no field position. Errors killed us and it seemed like every bounce of the ball went against us. The most frustrating thing for me is we are used as the guinea pigs for this new rule... no trials, hell they weren't even allowed to have refs at training to give them an idea of how it will be implemented. After Sutton called 3 restarts in a row on us he realised it's impact and decided to put it in the back pocket... so we got put on the back foot and then an instant relaxation from the onfield ref. I think refereeing will be different for every other game from here on in, because no one had any idea of how it would play out... now we as the guinea pig have shown them what can happen and they will likely adjust for every other game. If they don't the warriors and titans could get 60 put on them regularly.
