Then why have the crackdowns? I remember probably 8 years ago the NRL specifically said that "as long as it looks like they're trying to play it properly, it's okay". Fair enough, if that's the rule, no problems, we all get to do it. But it was only a season or two later when the NRL backflipped and said it needs to be done properly. And had a crackdown. Fast-forward a couple of seasons and the Roosters and Souths win premierships off their power game, with tunnel-balling being a decisive factor, and they have another crackdown. For the exact same thing. The very next season it's ignored again. Completely agree. But my biggest concern is that it's not incompetence, or refs being instructed to go light on the penalties. It's that it is a deliberate tactic employed by the refs. And it's being used to influence games. I'm not talking about having pre-determined winners, though there is a very strong case to show that throughout a season this is happening. But isolated to each individual game on their own, these penalties are deliberately being used arbitrarily to even up the penalty count, or to manipulate the contest to make it a closer game. What's more, while the media is quick to jump on anything and everything that could possibly stir up the public's emotions, why the **** aren't they jumping on top of this? We're not the only ones to notice it, are we? Or does complaints like this just get written off as being poor losers, "every team gets bad calls, if they were good enough they'd win despite the bad calls" ???
