When you factor in the torn achilles and multitude of hamstring & calf strains he's had over the last 4 years, it's pretty reasonable to deduct that he may be opting to "slip over" instead of trying to change direction in unison with the person he's trying to tackle because he's worried about leg injuries, which he's proven to be extremely susceptible to and which often occur (or re-occur in his case) when attempting to change directions at high speeds. Because when he defends in the line he has other players there to help and soften the blow, when it's just him on his lonesome at the back there's really no options apart from throw your body in front of the freight train, or don't.
