I actually can't remember the last time we consistently deployed the shapes or formations of which you and @Big Pete speak. Consistently, getting the ball out wide, getting the ball to do the work. Maybe here and there when Hodges was playing. In any case, that is what the best sides do under the new rules more than ever, simply because it is the winning strategy, especially against teams like us - fast ball movement after your forwards have set the platform AND there are shapes and formations in place to exploit the momentum gained. Similar goes for field position and the momentum gained from a quality kicking game. Well, at least we know why we don't have a good kicking game - nobody knows how to do it other than the guy playing for Souths. We assume the players are reasonably intelligent footy wise at least to get to NRL, and that the coach also knows what to do. It is after all, (just) a simple game. So assuming everyone knows what works and what doesn't, then why can't this team execute it consistently? As I said, it has been years since we did. Is there some kind of gene that has been passed down since at least 2015 say, causing this team to revert to one out for 4 or 5 than boot down field and occasionally chase. I can't get my head around why something as simple and basic as passing the ball, and defending your space, especially on the edge, appears to be rocket science to the players. I also can't get my head around why we reverted from quality attack and improving defence last week, to last night's disgrace. I confess I am starting to doubt Walters, unless the players we have are indeed just dumb and are comfortable with that, and as dumb as our recruiting has been which does actually explain a lot of the bullshit we keep seeing. Not having a decent kicker has really exposed us, and our only decent kicker is in reserves because he can't get his shit together in the other aspects of his game. What a mess.
