It was actually Matt Bowen that I think who Hunt replaced as QLD fullback. Bowen was fullback in Game 1 of 2006 before being overlooked for Hunt to make his debut in the second game. He missed the decider due to injury with Clinton Schifcofske filling in. Hunt was fullback again in 2007 for all three games. Slater was fullback in game one of 2008 with Hunt partnering Thurston in the halves. There was a lot of talk about this in the media as many (myself included) thought Prince should have got a spot. I was highly critical of that team in game one as there were some puzzling choices (including PJ Marsh, whom I'm a fan of but hadn't played much football to warrant an Origin call-up). It seemed like a bit of arrogance was creeping into team selections after successive series wins. We got things back on track for the second game with Prince being recalled, Hunt starting and Slater reverting to the bench. In terms of who's better - I think they both had similar styles with ball playing. I think the most obvious difference was their running games and kick returns. Hunt evolved into a real kamikaze style runner who launched himself into the defensive line. He was very tough and often got our sets off to a great start for Brisbane and QLD. It's what Hoffman tries to do but can't. Slater relies more on his speed and evasiveness when running the ball. In terms of consistency, Slater is hard to beat though. Honestly, I'd have to check the photo at the finish line.
