Well i had a thought. I am sick of hearing our best players and $1m in the same sentence. So i have been trying to think how to get around this. Pay them $1m a season with the current salary cap? NO. I see only 1 solution. Salary cap exempt Marquee player. 1 player from each team will have 50% of their salary exempt from the salary cap. in addition, should this player be a local junior from the club and has player for a minimum of 7 years then they get a further 50% reduction bringing this players salary cap cost to the team at only 25%. Once a player like Inglis, Lockyer, Buderus, SBW, C.Smith, Gasnier, Menzies & Hunt has played for 7 years, they could possibly be on as high as $2m a season. outrageous i know but if this is what it is going to take to keep them then i am all for it. So now the problem. Struggling clubs like the Sharks, Newcastle, Rabbits etc will not be able to afford the players. I say bad luck. This is now a game of business and not a charity. I am sorry but if you can not afford to play in our game then you should not be here. Currently the salary cap is holding back 12 or so clubs because a tiny handfull are running out of money. I would love to see all our clubs succeed but when there are currently 9 teams based in Sydney and the current economic situation, they simply will not survive. It is just a matter of time until clubs start folding. I for one would rather see a 12 team comp and have the likes of the players i have mentioned, than see a 16 team comp all containing players that are yet to reach superstar status. And once they do, they leave. Allowing each club to have only 1 marquee player will still even out the talent whilst stopping a few clubs from buying everyone. With the further 50% reduction for local Juniors, this will give players an added incentive to stick with their club. K. Hunt for instance is what 22? He was offered $400K a season for 4 years. He would be 26 when he is off contract next and what would he want then? $600K $700K? With the current salary cap, there is no way the Broncos would ever afford his next contract. What are all your thoughts? Granted some of the figures mentioned would need to be tweeked a bit but with the NRL doing nothing, someone has to.
